5 Ways- Stop Crying when Cutting Onions!

I hate crying!  Especially when it is due to onions!  It hurts too!  Maybe I am just a big wimp, but I figure that there are many of you that feel the same way as I do!  We love onions, sauteed onions, buttery delicious onions...but it becomes torturous trying to cut these darn things.  I hope this helps a bit!

5 Tips to Stop the Crying over Onions!!!

1. Cut the onions under running water.  Be careful though, please!  I don't want you to get hurt!  This prevents the sulfide from travelling up into our noses and inducing that terrible crying reaction.  Perhaps soaking them in water for a bit before cutting them is a better idea.  I will leave it up to you, but choose safely!

2.  Put those fab onions in the freezer for 5 minutes or so and then get going on cutting them.

3.  Make sure no one is around you, because this tip may be one you want to do alone.  Put on some goggles to prevent the vapors from getting to you.

4. Cut the root of the onion off last.   By the way, the less surface area exposed on an onion the less sulfuric compounds can pass up to you, making your eyes sting.

5.  Breathe through your mouth versus your nose.

These are suggestions that I have heard about, but I really want to hear from you on what has worked.  Please let me know if there is some great tip that I have missed or that you believe is the best "keep from crying while cutting onions" tip!

Contact lenses work great. When I wear mine, I can cut 2 onions without any eye burns. But I also know tghat extended exposition to cut onions will eventually start burning your eyes even with contact lenses!
But to cut 1 or 2 onions at a regular speed, you should be OK with contact lenses!

Just don't leave chopped onions out for too long.

I preheat my pot or pan with oil or water (depending on what I'm cooking the onions in), then I quickly chop, taking care to keep onion somewhat 'together' so the pieces don't scatter on the cutting board (this is the same idea as reducing the amount of chopped onion exposed to air to prevent fumes escaping and this step just takes practice).

Then after quickly chopping I IMMEDIATELY put the onion into the pot or pan and COVER with a lid till it cooks down somewhat.

If you ever do have to leave a chopped onion sitting around for awhile, put it into a bowl and fill the bowl with water to cover the onion pieces. When you're ready to use the chopped onion just drain in a colander.

One more tip: Vidalia onions aren't as strong as some other onions. Make sure the onion isn't too green looking, those ones are very strong!
